Aim: To be Christ's quick hearers—listening intently to Him.
Doctrine: The church's quick hearers prefer God's whispers over their own flesh's shouts. Hearing the gospel with faith is always beneficial; speaking words without grace is always dangerous.
Exegesis: Why quick hearing is so contrary to our fallen nature: because we would rather vent than be instructed (v. 19); we are inclined toward self-righteousness instead of Christ-righteousness (v. 20); vileness, not humility, is our natural bent (v. 21).
Further application: How we Christians become quick hearers: the ''school of hard knocks'' helps, by deflating our sinful egos, and the grace of God prevails, by remitting our sin (through Christ's blood atonement).
Key verse: v. 19 ''So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath...''
