The rallying cry of the French Revolution in 1789 was, “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.” D.H. Lawrence, writing some 120 years after the French Revolution said, “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity is the three-fanged serpent.” We have much to be grateful for that the American War of Independence was guided by vastly different principles than what guided the French Revolution. The main cause of the American War of Independence was the state’s encroachment into areas where they had no jurisdiction. The greatest danger facing us in our day is the state persistently functioning beyond their limits and encroaching into our lives. Vital to liberty are authorities staying within their boundaries. This is the “divine cord of liberty.” How can we address the eroding of liberty? Establishing true liberty in the family and the church are the necessary first steps to establishing true liberty on the national level. This means respecting and honoring God’s boundaries in all of our dealings and relationships. Until such behavior becomes an unbending characteristic of our families and churches, it will not become a national characteristic.
