Israel's Irresponsible Leaders
Verse 9 seems at first to be disconnected to what has come before. Vss. 1-8 proclaim salvation for the Gentiles, the drawing near of those far off so that they all become Sabbath people. But vss. 9-12 give a warning about Israel's leadership that behaved selfishly and irresponsibly. That seems very different. The connection lies in the fact that IS has been giving comfort to the church in the midst of trial, helping them to look to the Messiah for hope. Their help would not come from men, however powerful they might be. Instead, God would help them. That hope would enable them face the trial that would come through the further decay of Israel, and the reality of being taken prisoner and deported into exile. Then, having comforted the remnant in Israel, Isaiah also forewarned them of the nature of the decay they would face. They would face the challenge of living under the hand of selfish and irresponsible leaders. By speaking this way, IS gave courage to believers and warning to the selfish leaders.
