The angelic tour guide takes John to a river of life flowing from the throne in the New Jerusalem.
This vision is similar to that given the prophet Ezekiel (chapter 47). In Ezekiel's vision, the river begins as a trickle from the altar in the temple flowing out, ever deepening until it is a might flow. It goes into the Arabah and sweetens the waters of the Dead Sea to make it live again.
I take it that Ezekiel's vision is that of Salvation predicted before the coming of Christ. John's vision is that of salvation fulled at the second coming of Christ. Since Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, no altar is need. There is no temple in the New Jerusalem. Jesus, the true Temple, now reigns, supplying His people with abundant and eternal satisfaction at the river of Life.
