After Jesus silenced the Pharisees in their effort to condemn Him for a supposed Sabbath violation, Jesus confronted them over their prideful choice of seats of honor at the Sabbath banquet. God opposes the proud (James 4:6). Pride is the root of all human sinfulness. Sadly, the disciples were not immune to this awful tendency, as noted in Mark 10. Jesus, Himself, became the supreme example of what God desires of all His children. "But this is the one to whom I [the Lord] will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word (Isaiah 66:2, ESV). Jesus reversed what by worldly standards is considered for greatness and recognition.
