Legalism is an attempt to legislate righteousness, to establish extra-biblical rules and regulations applicable to all which become a test of one's salvation or spirituality. The Pharisees in Jesus' day sought to micromanage life down to the littlest detail. Their obsession with the 'regulations passed down from the elders' would inevitably lead to conflict between them and Jesus. The point of constant conflict involved the interpretation and application of the fourth commandment: 'Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy!' This sermon examines whether Jesus and his disciples were Sabbath breakers or Sabbath keepers? Was there any 'wiggle room' in the iron-clad command? Jesus notes the exceptions: Survival over strict compliance; serving God over Sabbath rest; 'Spirit' of the law over the 'letter' of the law. And then Jesus makes the declaration that he is the Sovereign Lord over the Sabbath. We are to follow Him, take His yoke upon us-- His yoke which is easy and light!
