We may look upon tyranny from a civil government as being the greatest threat to the faithfulness of Christ's kingdom. No doubt, the hatred and violence of nations against Christ and His truth is great in forbidding public worship, in censoring public expressions of the truth, in establishing wicked laws that threaten faithful pastors from preaching. And yet in such persecuting nations, the kingdom of Christ is often not destroyed, but is greatly purified and even grows.
Of even greater concern than violent persecution to the purity of Christ's kingdom is the influence that a worldly culture has upon God's people. When Christ's kingdom is not necessarily attacked with violence, but is compromised with all manner of toleration of religion (so that Jesus is just one of the gods in a nation's pantheon of gods), and when God's people become lazy in holding firm the biblical truth of Christ and rather slowly give up biblical attainments in order to get along with other churches, religious bodies, and with the worldly culture all around them, worldly culture is likely a more dangerous enemy than harsh persecution.
Both of these enemies (cultural influence and tyranny) were evident in the Greek Empire against God's people. But the Lord was ever faithful to preserve His remnant in preparation for the coming of Christ.
