History is necessary for the correct interpretation of prophecy, for the fulfillment of prophecy occurs in history (whether it is prophecy that has already been fulfilled or prophecy that shall be fulfilled in the future). Since God ordains and sovereignly governs both prophecy and history, it behooves us to be students of both biblical prophecy and history, which ultimately focuses upon God's plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.
Thus, as we consider Nebuchadnezzar's dream and its interpretation, I don't want to quickly identify the kingdom represented by each metal of this great image and move on to the next metal (kingdom) of the image (all in a few minutes). I want you to understand some history about each of these four kingdoms—not merely as a history lesson (history for the sake of history), but history as God's providential lesson in teaching us what connection each of these four kingdoms has with God's people.
This history of these kingdoms teaches us how God preserves and delivers His people out of the clutches of the most powerful rulers and kingdoms on earth (but not without great hardship, captivity, and persecution). These historical judgments and deliverances are written for our instruction to give us hope that the same God still rules over the nations and over your life (Romans 15:4). Jesus ordains history. Man records it.
Our main points today as we consider the kingdom of the Medes and the Persians are: (1) The Connection between King Cyrus and God's People; (2) The Connection between King Darius and God's People; (3) The Connection between King Ahasuerus and God's People.
