The Eastern shepherd must never be thought of as a pale sentimental figure but rather one of immense strength and great authority. He is pictured in the OT as the Lord over His sheep and therefore the Israelites called their Kings ‘shepherds’—David being the chief example. His word is not just the gentle voice but the kingly command. His relationship to the sheep is not that of a feeble guide but of an authoritative Lord. And it is the very strength of the character of the shepherd which gives the sheep security. —William McClure Thomson
