Jesus had already told them that He would die (Mark 8:31) soon which caused Peter to privately rebuke Jesus for His remarks. Jesus then rebuked Peter for not realizing what he was saying or more importantly the origin of his thoughts. Satan has exerted many efforts throughout the long chronology of world events to prevent the Redeemer from arriving. In the rebuke to Peter He said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Peter did not understand then that Satan was trying to prevent Jesus from going to the cross just as he tried many times before to prevent Him from coming to this earth. Now the time was nearing for the Son of Man to fulfill His supreme mission of suffering, dying and being resurrected. This was for the dual purposes of cleansing the heavenly tabernacle, which Satan polluted at the time of his fall, and providing for the redemption of fallen mankind, which Satan also caused.
