The attention of the writer of Genesis, Moses, now turns our focus to the next generation after Abraham and Isaac. We are able to see the promises of God being outworked into the future. Although the ungodly line of Ishmael is very fruitful in terms of numbers of children born, it is the line of Isaac that is of greater interest even though their numbers are smaller and the bearing of children so difficult as in the case of Rebekah.
From the birth of Jacob and Esau we see God's plan of election now being worked out with these twins. This sovereign choice is established in eternity but does not negate human responsibility. Esau is held up as a bad example in Hebrews 12:16-17 due to the choices he made. Our responsibility in Scripture is not diminished by the biblical doctrine of election. Election puts man in his place as a powerless creature incapable of pleasing God. It also glorifies God as it establishes Him as the author of life and salvation. It is the only accurate description of how God works in the world and makes everything to hinge upon the Lord Jesus Christ which was the Father's plan in eternity.
