What can Moses say of these people in interceding for them?
Most times when you use universals like "Always" and "Never," its unjustified, but in this case, its true: You’ve been REBELLING AGAINST THE LORD SINCE THE DAY that I knew you!
What good words can Moses speak over the people in interceding for them? what can he possibly say? There is nothing that can make up for their rebellion against God.
But in interceding for the people, he does not plead the goodness of their character, instead he pleads God’s own character and His own gracious promises back to Him:
He addresses the Lord as Adonai Yahweh – a special address used only in prayer “Lord God” It emphasizes the Lordship of God over the people, and also his nature as their God, their redeemer, the one who covenanted with them He then sets before the Lord 3 petitions:
1) God will not destroy his inheritance, Moses pointedly calls them YOUR PEOPLE, YOUR INHERITANCE, whom he had redeemed Himself from Egypt
2) He Calls Upon God to remember his own promises, His covenant vows to his servants the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would make of them a mighty nation, that would be a blessing to all the nations.
3) He Points out the likely reaction of the Egyptians, and how it would seem like Yahweh could not deliver this people.
