One of the most persistent errors people fall into is thinking that their salvation will come because of their own righteousness and good works, but what the bible tells us is that even the people of God, far from being righteous are sinful and stiff-necked and that if they are going to be saved it will be through grace alone!
As the people are about to enter into the promised land Moses preaches to them to remember that they sinned against God, breaking their covenant with him at Sinai only a few days after they had made it, he then tells them that it was only because of his pleading or INTERCEDING on their behalf that they weren't destroyed.
But Moses as intercessor or mediator for the people was only a type pointing to a greater mediator. He himself could never atone for their sins, or establish their righteousness. Moses pointed the way though, to the INTERCESSOR who would make real atonement for His people and establish their Righteousness. That intercessor is JESUS CHRIST.
