In 1518, Martin Luther explained the difference between a theology of glory and a theology of the Cross. Unfortunately, most world religions, even some religions that may have their basis in the Bible, operate on a theology of glory, based on the deeds that we can achieve, and the worldly influence and power we can accumulate and wield. These are enemies of the Cross of Christ, who calls His children to share in His suffering.
Those who appear to be part of the church but still internally operate on a theology of glory have exposed themselves as part of the wrong team, and John encourages us not to switch jerseys and join the losing team of the devil, but to abide in Christ, so that one day we may share in His glory at the proper time.
