Wicked people often don't seem to experience the consequences of their sin that we'd expect to see. They often seem immune to pain and punishment. Often, they actually seem to be making a profit from their wrongdoing.
But the Jonah story reminds us that this is simply the calm before the storm. Sin always leads to chaos, and destruction, and death. Sin always has consequences for ourselves and for others around us. Sin always has an aftermath that we can't clean up after.
This message is a warning to consider the consequences before we run from God. But it is also a consolation for those who've already messed up. It is a reminder that there is always grace for those who stop running from God and run to Him instead.
