Nothing brings greater joy to the heart of a child than being wanted-- whether chosen to play on a ball team or to be in a play or to be wanted by parents or classmates. To know that someone has picked you brings comfort and joy. Peter, in writing to some first century misfits-- pilgrims and sojourners who are out of step with their culture-- who are hated by the world-- wants them to know that while they might not be wanted by the world, they are wanted by God! They are His 'Elect"-- His chosen ones! His picks! While many consider the doctrine of election too complicated, confusing, or controversial, Peter views it as the perfect comfort for those feeling marginalized and shunned by the world! We are God's Elect according to the foreknowledge of God. God chose us in Christ before the foundations of the world to be the recipients of and channels of His blessings. God's picks were signed, sealed, and delivered by the sanctification of the Spirit for we've been gloriously saved and set apart for God, made a member of His team, part of His family. And God's goal or purpose in all of this is unto the obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Christ. We've been brought into a new covenant relationship with God-- a covenant of obedience with Christ. That's why we march to a different drummer!
