One writer on labor relations has said this: “A gospel of ‘costly grace' has widespread social consequences for all aspects of life including labor relations.”
God cares about our work. More specifically, he cares about the relationship between workers and managers. Because of the gospel of costly grace even the workplace can be a theatre of God's redeeming work. Christian workers must diligently labor to advance the interests of their employer. Christian managers must care for their workers.
In the best situation, these commands will produce workplace harmony. Christians must “not view management and labor as ultimately hostile opponents.” Christian workers and manager must both view the “other side” as their own unique opportunity to let grace shine.
Colossians 4:1 speaks to managers (both specifically and generally). As a law-text Colossians 4:1 is meant to lead to repentance and renewed obedience. When taken to heart it will hurt everyone who manages others. But it is not meant to crush. Jesus' grace covers the sins of those who have ruled sinfully.
