Covetousness is heinous idolatry because it is discontent with only Christ alone. Several listeners thought this sermon might imply that all desire for anything we don't have is sin. Not so. Covetous desire demands what we want in order to be content. In other words, if God does not deliver on my desire, I call Him blameworthy. In submission to his will, content with his Providence, it is not sinful to desire nor to ask; indeed, we are commanded to make our request known to God.
