Paul uses accounting language in these verses -- counting gains, losses, and worth, and he concludes that his entire portfolio of righteousness was worthless. It's like having a billion dollars in currency that no one accepts any more. It's completely worthless. You see, human righteousness is unspendable in the economy of heaven. Christ is the only currency accepted there. And I wonder friends if we sometimes trust in our own resume of righteousness like Paul once did. You may come from generations of Christians. You might even be a descendant of Billy Graham himself. You might have all the boxes checked: you don't smoke, you don't drink, you don't even wear a bikini. You don't go to the movies or own a TV. You're in church every time the doors are open. You give thirty percent. You read your Bible and pray for hours every day, but if you think any of that makes you righteous, then you are lost. All of that is worthless. Righteousness only comes through faith alone in Christ alone.
