The lamb for the sacrifice had to be perfect, no blemishes and it foreshadowed the perfection of the Lord Jesus, the Lamb of God. The lamb’s death was a substitutionary death: it died so the people and animals inside didn’t have to die. Jesus’ death was as a substitute: his life for yours, he died so you can live. The lamb was to be eaten, completely, to identify with what just happened. Jesus says eat my flesh and drink my blood or you have no part of me. You can say you believe in his death, but not live in a way that eats his flesh. Confession of Christ has to be followed by living in him. The lamb was eaten with traveling clothes on, in haste: the Jews were not going to stay there, they were delivered by death out of slavery to live a new life. When Christ has forgiven your sins it is time to leave them behind, you don’t live at that address any longer: you have a new home and a new direction.
