Today, we are going to look at a climactic passage of Scripture. It is familiar. It probably can be quoted, but I think we often overlook its importance. We will be turning to Matthew 16:13-20. Jesus takes his disciples away to Caesarea Philippi--A district about 25 mi. N of Sea of Galilee, at the base of Mt. Hermon. This was different from the city of Caesarea built by Herod the Great on the Mediterranean coast. It lay near the source of the Jordan, at the Old Testament Dan, the northern boundary of ancient Israel. It was a pagan territory and bordered the Gentile world. It was a place where the Greek deity Pan was worshipped. It had been named Paneas but was renamed by Philip the tetrarch in honor of himself and Augustus Caesar. It had been a place where Herod had dedicated a temple for the worship of Caesar. It is a place that possibly foreshadowed the gospel ministry to the world. Jesus takes the apostles and poses the most important question in the world, and the correct answer will form the foundation of the church. My title this morning will be Christ and the Church: The Glory of Faithful Love. This morning we will address 1) Love’s Sweetest Confession- Builder 2) Love Stands on Truth- Foundation 3) Love Stronger than Death- Duration 4) Love’s Faithfulness and Purity
