Aim: To be wholly committed to Christ's work in the world (through His church).
Doctrine: The church's success is always met with fear and suspicion. The fear relates to dread of the reality of the covenant God, and the suspicion holds out some hope for human help (at the expense of Christ).
Exegesis: The wonder and challenge of the completed wall: with God's blessing, the church's mission prospers (v. 15); with God presence, the church's influence is profound (v. 16); with God's calling, the church's leaders (e.g. Nehemiah) will persevere (vv. 17-19); all despite opposition.
Further application: How churchmen are to view the work of Christ (in the world): with one eye, we praise God for His Son's expanding kingdom, while with the other, we expect trouble from those who are not happy with it.
Key verses: vv. 15, 16b ''So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days...For they perceived that this work was done by our God.''
