In the midst of telling us of many miracles pointing to Christ's authority as expressed in His works, Matthew tells us of two would be disciples of our Lord. The first is a scribe who professes his willingness to follow Jesus anywhere. The second is a son who is willing to follow the Lord, but not yet. Our Lord responded to these two men in very different ways. To the over-zealous scribe our Lord cast a wet blanket of reality to show him that he had not truly counted the cost of following Christ. To the under-zealous man our Lord lit a fire, insisting that He must be this man's all in all. The cost of following Jesus is high, and He would not have the cost to be hidden from any of us. But at the end of the day, the cost is worth it. More to the point, the Lord Jesus is worth it.
