Although as a church we don't celebrate what is sometimes called the ‘Church Calendar' we rightfully celebrate and remember the great events in the life of Christ – His birth, his death, burial, and resurrection. We probably don't give enough attention to Christ's ascension 40 days after His resurrection and then to the Day of Pentecost and the coming of the Hoy Spirit another 10 days later. Another very important aspect of Jesus' ministry, though we cannot mark it to a specific time – was His selection of His 12 disciples. Now all Christians certainly should be aware that Jesus had disciples. You can't read the gospels without realizing this basic fact. But the importance of Jesus' choice of 12 disciples and His training of them is likely not appreciated as it should be as one of the most important elements of Jesus' ministry before He suffered on the cross on behalf of His people. Part of our goal this morning is to see again the vital importance of Jesus' calling and training of the twelve disciples. The main point of application for us today is that we try to appreciate the theological and practical importance of what is introduced in the first 4 verses of Matthew 10. We will look at our text in two parts. First from 10:2-4, the listing of the 12 disciples, and then second from 10:1, the summoning of the 12 disciples.
