When Adam sinned he lost access to the voice of God. After Genesis 3 there is no record that Adam ever heard from or was directly taught by God again. We cannot find God on our own. We need Him to reveal himself to us by His word and his Spirit. These people that Jesus was speaking with had the Word of God but they were not open to the Spirit of God. The promise of the new covenant is that the Father through the Spirit would speak directly into the hearts of people and lives and changed. Every person who has truly been saved has been powerfully drawn by the Father to the Son.
Two things must happen if people are to be rescued from their lost condition. The first is we must take the gospel to them in Word and in deed. They will not hear without a preacher. Since everyone who hears from God comes through Jesus Christ therefore He must be displayed to the nations for them to come. No one gets saved at the altar of the unknown God. The second is the father must powerfully draw them. As we saw last week the old covenant is an example of what happens when the truth of God is given to men without the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. We need to cry out to God that he will be merciful to those who are blind and open their eyes so they can see.
