The doctrine of creation is a watershed truth. Rain that falls even slightly to one side of a divide will be channeled away from rain that falls on the other side. So belief in either creation or non-creation will lead to entirely different worldviews. If God created the world then it belongs to him. It was made according to a thoughtful design with order and purpose. If the world has no creator then everything simply is. There is no ultimate moral standard and no grand purpose toward which history is moving. God want us to believe in a creator. So the first words of Scripture establish divine creation: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). Those words tell us that God was eternally and meaningfully existing before we came on the scene. They tell us where we came. They begin to explain to us why we are alive and how we are called to live. And they provide a context for understanding our broken world and how it will be restored.
