A massively important truth is completely missed by both Jew and Gentile. And Jesus is now explaining the problem of perfection in the law, as he is teaching the Beatitudes.
Jesus is calling the people who claim to be there to learn of Christ, He is calling them to the most important self assessment of their lives. This is the same assessment that John the Baptist called the people to. Both John Baptist, and Jesus has called the people to see their woeful state under the Law. The problem is that the people looked at the law of God as their standard for righteousness, but they failed to see that it was not their standard, but rather, It was God's perfect standard of judgment and condemnation to all who offended.
The law of God was without remorse or pity or mercy or grace. It held the perfect standard, because it perfectly reflected the nature of God as Perfect Divine Holiness, and Perfect divine Justice and Perfect Divine Wrath.
Looking at the Law as set fourth in the 10 commandments alone should show The Laws perfect problem clearly. In Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 God lay's down the Law to the people literally. Now here is the problem of a perfect Law. It demands perfect obedience, but the law cannot justify, it can only declare guilt of innocence. As Paul declares in Romans chapter 2. Everyone who has sinned either apart from the knowledge of the Law, or with a full understanding of the law, either way. They that sin against the law are condemned by it's very nature, because they are doing what the Law of God states. Verse 15. ‎ They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness.
