WSC #3: What do the Scriptures principally teach? The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.
Aim: To think and act in accord with the Holy Scriptures.
Doctrine: Thinking and acting are inseparable, as observed in man's sinfulness, and as observed in the Christian's renewal.
Exposition: Jesus incarnates God's doctrine and man's duty. What we are to believe about God has been revealed (vv. 21-22a); in knowing God, we know ourselves (vv. 22b-25a); God's righteousness is the same in the past and eternal present (vv. 25b-26); justification by faith alone, in Christ alone (vv. 27-28); God is one, so His church is one (vv. 29-30); Jesus is our orthodoxy and our orthopraxy (v. 31).
Application: How the church practices what it preaches: by living covenantally, cut-loose, and carefully.
Key verse: v. 26 ''It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.''
