When Christ's gospel and Spirit meet the powers of darkness conflict is inevitable. The story of the Philippian slave girl and jailer are instances of that. The way of the world is seen in the girl's: involvement with the occult; her enslavement; the cruelty of her owners; and the injustice of magistrates. It is also seen in the suicidal despair of the jailer. It is the way of Satan, who is a murderer from the beginning. Christ's servants denied themselves much in becoming missionaries. That is Christ's way. Christ set both those people free. He upheld his servants when wrongfully imprisoned, and he exposed the sin of their enemies. The outcome was a church in Philippi. They were a mixed lot, but brotherly love prevailed and Paul was able to call them "my joy and my crown".
