The ultimate expression of devotion to Christ as His disciple is to relate to God and to one another from a motive of unconditional love. We learn from the Scriptures then that love is a relational term, not an emotional term. The way in which we relate to one another is a choice, not a feeling. The command to love one another is an old command (Deut 6:5), but it is also given as a new commandment (1 John 2:7-8) in light of the coming of Christ.
