Paul defended his apostleship against the attack of the false apostles, Judaizers, who sought control of the church in Corinth. In order to take full control, they had to get Paul out of the picture. Thus, Paul uses a counterattack, not for a carnal defense of his image, but because, as a servant of Christ, he sought to preserve the church. He did so out of love for the Corinthian believers.
