The Lord Jesus was obedient in His resurrection, just as He had promised us all.
In His resurrection, He was vindicated against the injustice and slanders of wicked men. Indeed, by His resurrection, God has declared Jesus to be the Judge of all the world!
But what if God had not ordained that Christ should rise again? How would Christ, still lying dead in the grave, impact the hopes of the saints?
Paul taught that we are united with Jesus in His death, and that in Christ all the just punishment for our crimes are paid. Having died with Christ, we can never against be subject to the wrath of the broken law, for He exhausted it all in His body on the tree.
But had Christ not risen again, we could not have risen with Him.
To some who claim to be Christians, this is how they live - as if they had not risen with Christ. They remain in spiritual corruption, dead in their sin, living in sin just as they always had. They conceive themselves to be free from judgment, with no new life and no change in their conduct.
Had Christ not risen, we could have no union with Him in His resurrection. There would be no new life for us, no sanctification. We would be rescued from wrath, but not from our sin.
But because Christ is risen from the dead, so too are we in Him! We are dead to sin, but alive in Christ! Our new lives are both stated facts, and inducements to aspire to live out our new lives for God's glory.
We no longer have to wallow in our sins, and in the judgment for them, but now we can live in newness of life unto righteous obedience.
Only in union with our risen Christ can we know what it means to be free from the bondage of sin and the law's judgment!
