Most people want to be liked. They want to be appreciated. They want at least once in a while to be the center of attention. They want to know that everybody else approves of them. So to obtain their own pleasure, they have to please somebody else.
Have you ever found yourself in that rut? Maybe you’re their right now? It’s amazing how we contribute to this self-perpetuating problem—in order to be pleased we must have someone else be pleased with us. I’m only happy if other people are happy with me! Yikes! All this sounds so oppressive! It sounds like bondage. Did you know that we as humans were designed to serve someone? We will always seek to serve someone—to make them happy.
So why then is happiness so elusive? Because we are serving the wrong person. God wants us to only serve Him. In fact, we won’t ever be happy, satisfied, or pleased until we only serve Him. Serving only Christ is extremely liberating!
