While the war was won on Calvary the individual battles are up to us. Joshua here asked what is this noise, thinking possibly a battle was taking place. And Moses responded basically that it could be one of three things though he knew it was the third. Why? Because God had already told him what was going on. God knows already what is going on in our lives; he knows that we have to battle every day. The noise we make concerning the battle is up to us and it will fall into one of three categories. There is the noise of victory. It is the shout of victory, our battle cry, the declaration that we are going to win this fight. How can we? With the whole armor of God, we can fight the good fight. And the process make the enemy afraid because God fights for us. Or there is the noise of defeat. When we have gone in to the fight in our own strength and the enemy has slaughtered us. We start saying things like woe is me, God has forgotten me, no one cares, and the pity party is at my place right now. But the third can go for either way but it leads to God. It is the joyful noise. Which can mean both to be happy, as in praising God for what He has done or to blow an alarm. It can be a shout of distress. A call for help because the enemy has left you for dead on the battle field and you don’t want to stay dead. This noise will bring joy to God’s heart because we are either showing Him how much we love Him or how much we need Him.
