Strife that was stirring within the church at Philippi was not only robbing Paul of the fulness of Gospel joy, it was depriving the congregation of that joy as well. Paul urges them to think the same way and show the same love in full accord and one mind. Paul doesn't leave this admonition in the abstract. This will mean "doing nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility counting others as more significant than ourselves." Selfish ambition is rivalry and competition for attention. Conceit is empty pride. We can count others as more significant than ourselves when we acknowledge our own failings and realize that all we have is given us by God that serve Him and others.
