After addressing worship and how to not diminish the power and holiness of God through worship, in this week's passage, God addresses slavery. In our "modern" world, slavery is considered pure evil, but God started His law about how men should treat one another by regulating slavery. Slavery was always a major part of the human situation and requires regulation. God does not condemn it, which is consistent since He is a Lord, i.e. a slave master. Instead, He regulates it so that the Israelites will be slave masters like Him rather than masters like Pharoah. He establishes laws, so if they were followed, the Hebrew slaves would be blessed with freedom after six years of labor. They would picture the Sabbath rest, laboring for six years and receiving their rest on the seventh. He also establishes rights for the slave. The slave can choose to remain a slave after the six years if he desires, which is the picture of a Christian who still desires Christ as a master after serving Him.
