Apart from Christians, no one else worships God. And so we find ourselves today in much the same situation that Malachi addresses to ancient Israel. Malachi gives us five characteristics of worthless worship. 1. Contemptuous worship: worship that is void or without reverence/honor. 2. Cheap worship: God explicitly excluded blind animals from offerings. Besides being a direct act of disobedience, there is an underlying attitude that accompanies such an act. 3. Ceremonial/Ritual worship: Malachi is instructing them to seek grace, except he is doing it in a sarcastic voice because he knows God will not answer. 4. Resentful worship: Worship wore them out and was a chore. When you want to do something, you find the energy to do it. Israel didn't want to worship. To them it was a hard, tiresome task. 5. Cheating worship: You promise to worship, your intentions are to worship God sincerely, but then things happen and you don't.
