Since creation, the earth has been the battleground between God and Satan. God calls His people to respond to His Word, and Satan tries to lure them to follow his lies. At times, Satan is successful such that those who once were amongst us fall away. Among the many examples of apostasy in the Old Testament was King Amaziah (796-767 BC) of Judah.
2 Chronicles 25:2, “He did right in the sight of the Lord [IOW, he had a great start. From all outward appearances, it looked as if Judah had another godly king! Yet he had a character flaw which Satan took advantage of], yet not with a whole heart”
Amaziah’s religion was a religion of mere external behavior; in his heart he did not know God. As such, he was lured away into idolatry. 2 Chronicles tells the tragic story:
2 Chronicles 25:14, “Now it came about after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites that he brought the gods of the sons of Seir, set them up as his gods, bowed down before them, and burned incense to them”
In fact, at the close of his life, his epitaph would read thus:
2 Chronicles 25:27, “Amaziah turned away from following the Lord!”
