If we take the love of God for granted we shall fail to appreciate the sequence of the apostle's thought in this section. But when we assess our own weakness and particularly our ungodliness, then we discover both the need and the marvel of God's "unusual act" (Isaiah 28:21). What looms up in our minds as we seriously reckon with our ungodliness is our detestable nature and an ominous sense of the wrath of God, rightly due. But what is presented is a God who loved the ungodly and the sinner and sent His Son to do an "awesome work" (Isaiah 28:21); to be the propitiation and the redemption and the reconciliation for them. Oh, the glorious gospel!
