Paul wants Timothy to persevere in "these things" so everyone can see his progress–especially those who were looking down on him because he was young. Growth is visible isn't it? But what about you this morning? Can everyone see your progress or are you complacent. Spiritual complacency is dangerous friends, hence Paul's final exhortation to Timothy in chapter 4. Look at it with me in verse 16--Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. Paul says, "Timothy, watch your life, watch your doctrine, and watch closely." Friends, the drift is real, and we have to guard against daily. You see perseverance is an essential quality of true conversion and that's what Paul is calling Timothy here as a Christian first, but also as a pastor because his life and his message holds immense influence in the lives of those he shepherds. That's why when a preacher falls, it never leaves the faith of others unscathed.
