Now what is to be proved in our passage here is the possession of the Kingdom of God. And over hyped words will not suffice to prove it. When Paul wrote this challenge it was a time when words were loved and meant something. And yet he says they are not enough. We all the more should make and take this challenge, in a day like ours, when words aren't loved and mean very little. As a result we should not settle the case with words said, but with the evidence of changed and empowered living.
A hypochondriac can read a text listing the symptoms of some rare disease and by the mere suggestion of the word begin to think that they have the real thing. They may even be able to identify certain experiences in measure of the symptoms and assume on the rest and declare themselves to have a full blown case of the real thing. Now in the same way just reading the words of the Bible or understanding the lingo of salvation and agreeing with it doesn't make you saved. Even if you convince yourself that you have the real thing. Just because you have adopted into your language the current phrases of Christianity and can rehearse the phraseology of saving belief doesn't make you a believer.
