You should be startled to see Paul calling himself their Father in Christ. Verse 15 - For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. If you know you New Testament you'll know that the Lord Jesus had a strong word about calling someone Father. Matthew 23:9-12 - Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. So is Paul contradicting Christ here? Well Jesus was speaking against the scribes and Pharisee's who sought honor in the titles men gave them. But here Paul is careful to address his role completely under Christ. For times in these verses Paul says in Christ or in the Lord and once He says “if the Lord wills.” What Paul declares himself to be to these Corinthians is merely an under shepherd to Christ and the fatherhood he professes is not a title but merely a matter of the role Christ gave him in using Paul to bring them into saving faith. Paul says many others have come to assist you in your spiritual growth but Christ used me to be the person who led you to Him in the first place. In this sense I am a spiritual father to you.
