The message of the cross is a stumbling block (literally, a scandal) to the Jews, and foolishness to the Gentiles, Paul says. "But to those WHO ARE CALLED, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ [is] the power of God, and the wisdom of God." Paul makes 2 very important assertions here: the utter foolishness of the wisdom of this world; and the fact that God has not chosen to call many of the world's mighty and noble to salvation, but rather, the foolish, the weak, the base and despised. This passage makes it crystal clear that if you will one day stand before God's presence redeemed, forgiven and cleansed, it is because God accepted the righteous life of His son in the place of your unrighteousness; it is because God accepted Christ's sacrifice in your place, and it is because God graciously opened your heart and gave you faith to believe. It is ALL OF MERCY. IT IS ALL OF GRACE. Why? "To the praise of the glory of His grace." This sermon distinguishes between God's general call and God's particular call. It makes reference to Spurgeon, Richard Dawkins, Philip Johnson, Aldous Huxley, John Flavel, and Mohammed Ali, and it seemed to be a blessing to the flock at Liberty.
