Paul shows the relationship between being a debtor and an heir. A debtor is bound by the terms and demands of his creditor. Believers, Paul argues, are no longer debtors to the flesh and he shows the role the Holy Spirit plays in their relationship of being debtors to the Lord. Knowing what living according to the flesh looks like is vital to true sanctification and the Spirit of God plays a central role in making this known. However, in doing this, the Holy Spirit never works independently of God's word. When the Holy Spirit reveals believer's sins, it is done in the context of God's intimate family and confirms the reality that they are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
