This centurion is an amazing man. He had two qualities that are rare among fallen humanity: (1) he was held in high esteem by people who might be considered his enemies, and (2) he had a very low opinion of himself. The elders declared him to be a worthy man but he considered himself to be unworthy for the Master's presence. The people honored him for building a house for God but he would not recognize his worthiness to have Jesus enter into his home. This man, this centurion, this humble Roman captain pleads his unworthiness while appealing to Christ's glorious power to heal.
