When God's people drift from God's Word, the church takes on the attitude of the world and ultimately rejects the holiness of God in unbelief. We will think much too lightly about the holiness of God. Our God today is a loving God almost to the exclusion of being a holy God. We want God to be warm, welcoming and affirming and completely harmless. But a loving God does not mean that He is not a holy God. A God who is not holy is not God! We must have renewed reverence and awe for the holiness of God. Our holy God is powerful and transcendent. Americans today have thought lightly about the weight of the glory of His holiness. It is not heavy for them. People do what they want in churches and act like they want anywhere. How much flagrantly carnal worship is offered up to God today? Many churches are de-goding God! God is not your buddy. God is not you. Many of the praise songs written today are "God is my girlfriend" type songs. Without understanding the holiness of God, we can't understand the cross. The cross is not all about your worth and your future purpose. The cross is about divine justice for defying the holiness of God. It is the place where all God defying sin is paid for. Sins against a holy God are atoned. And part of this great sacrifice on the cross is that the Lord gives us His righteousness. God is not to be trifled with. We are prone to interpret God's will through a filter of what seems "reasonable" to us. We domesticate God and take Him lightly. His glory is the seriousness with which He must be taken!
