In this sermon on the doctrine of excommunication, Dr. Brunson discusses the idea of capital punishment as a metaphor of excommunication in the church of God.
From this sermon:
"Capital punishment as type of excommunication because there is a real sense in which when the Church of God excommunicates someone from its fellowship that that is a capital judgment. That that is indeed a sentence of death, particularly a sentence of death to sin in that individual and, if necessary, a sentence to death of the individual's flesh and ultimately, a sentence to eternal death if that individual can excommunicated from the Church of God without chastisement, then that individual is not a child of God, but a child of Satan."
