Before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (which set Him on the path to the cross), He declared to Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life." There is a veiled reference to His deity (I Am) in this declaration. Jesus does not simply exist; He is self-existent. Jesus is God the Son, the resurrection and the life. The resurrection is not simply a point of orthodox doctrine or a future event. The resurrection is a Person. This is why death could not hold Him. Because He lives, we too shall live. The poignant question for us today is the same as it was for Martha: "Do you believe this?"
