The apostle Paul draws a comparison between what Adam did as head of the human race in rebelling against God's clear command and what Christ did in dying to pay the penalty for sin as the second Adam. The action of one impacted the many. By the action of one man Adam, the many die. By the action of one man, Jesus Christ, the many are justified and may live. The many is a phrase used for all. The further impact of the result of the action of these two men is the contrast of the reign of sin and death with the reign of righteousness and life.
This section explains why the world is such a wretched and depraved place and why mankind is so hopeless and helpless. We learn how depravity and rebellion against God entered the perfect world He had created and spread down through the ages. We are brought face to face with the consequences of Adam's sin and the original plan had for man to live with Him in a relationship forever. It becomes apparent that rebellion first took root in the angelic realm in Satan's rebellion.
Against the backdrop of these details we appreciate all the more the great demonstration of God's love and the provision He has made for the salvation of man.
