God is totally free to show mercy and to harden! (14-18) He is free to show mercy (14-16) Is there injustice on God’s part? (14) Offense of 9:6-13 that justifies a charge of “injustice”: God does not love based upon human merit! “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated” (13) This is who God is and how God works! There is no injustice with God! (14) God is free to show mercy (15) OT Example: Ex 33:19 (to Moses) “I will have mercy upon whom I have mercy” “I will have compassion on whom I have compassion” Moses receives favor based solely upon God’s free choice! This is why there is no injustice with God! His glory consists in His freely showing His mercy by showing His name Our mercy depends solely upon God (16) “So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.” Not on human will—the human desire to please God Not on human exertion—the human effort to please God We get mercy only because of God, who has mercy!
